The Best Grammar-Checking Software

August 10, 2020

In the digital world, well-written communication is a must.

Consumers are reading more than ever — blog posts written by your company, social media posts, email, and more. Though some argue the internet is primarily visual, the best pictures are useless without words.

Even if you’re not a digital marketer, writing is important. Communicating clearly and effectively with your team should be a top priority — and bad grammar can make that difficult.

But not everyone has the time, effort, or skills to become an amazing writer. Thankfully, there are software programs that can check your grammar, fix your writing style, and help you get your point across. Let’s explore them.

1) Grammarly

Grammarly is, by far, one of the most popular online writing tools. Grammarly is an online plugin that hooks into your web browser and fixes your writing mistakes. It has a similar look to the red underline squiggles of Microsoft Word.

There is a free version, but to get the full impact of Grammarly, you’ll need to shell out $29.99 a month. That brings us to one of Grammarly’s most talked-about downsides: the price. While you can’t put a price on clear communication, $30 a month seems pretty steep for most consumers. However, if you can’t be bothered with grammar and punctuation, Grammarly’s easy fixes might prove useful — and worth the money.

2) ProWritingAid

ProWritingAid bills itself as a “grammar checker, style editor, and writing mentor” in one. It has similar compatibility to Grammarly — it works with Firefox, Google Chrome, and Safari, and will run on both Windows and Mac machines.

However, what really distinguishes ProWritingAid from Grammarly is its price. Instead of paying $30 a month, you’ll be paying only $70 a year. If you can’t justify the $30 a month price tag, $70 a year (or roughly $6 a month) seems more reasonable. Would you pay $6 a month for clear communication and spotless grammar?

3) Hemingway App

Maybe you’re not worried about the grammar in your emails. But what about when you’re writing reports or making presentations? Instead of hooking into your web-browser, Hemingway is a desktop application.

Hemingway, named for the author Ernest Hemingway, makes your writing as bold and clear as its namesake. It cuts through business jargon and translates business-speak into plain English. If you’re constantly trying to make your presentations better, Hemingway might be the best option for you. Best of all, it’s available for a one-time fee of $19.99.

Is writing our forte? Not exactly. We specialize in helping small and medium-sized businesses make the right decisions about software and IT. Contact Vodigy today to find out about our managed IT solutions!
