Biometric eye scanning with a digital interface-vscan

Dramatic Robots, Cats, and VSCAN

February 7, 2022

Automation is quickly becoming a key part of businesses both large and small. With today’s expansive technological options and fast-paced business expectations if you’re not automating – you’re behind.

That being said, robots, advanced machinery, and software can still fail at the simplest of tasks. Take the suicidal security bot incident of 2017. The K5 bot was seemingly primed and ready to take up its role as a security team member. However, it rolled right into a fountain – shortly after beginning the job.

The Verge comically titles their article on the incident ‘DC security robot quits job by drowning itself in a fountain’. Assuming we are correct in the notion that the robot was indeed not a sentient being, it surely did not intentionally mean to decommission itself. More likely than not, it was missing something simple in it’s reasoning capabilities that determined the fountain as a safe place to tread. Or that it’s sensing capabilities were too focused on critically analyzing other parts of the environment for security risks that the robot forgot it cannot walk across water.

Going back quite a bit earlier, we have the acoustic kitty incident. In the 1960s, the CIA surgically equipped a cat with surveillance equipment to spy on the Kremlin and Soviet embassies. While the surgery was a success, the outcome was not quite what they expected. According to many sources, the cat was released outside on a mission and immediately hit by a taxi. Other accounts by former CIA officers state that the cat just would not do what it was supposed to (duh, it’s a cat), had the surveillance equipment removed, and then lived a long happy life.

Whatever the reason for these failures, a simple truth can be found nestled in. Sometimes, there’s just no replacement for the human touch. We use our advanced reasoning skills in conjunction with our physical senses to determine how to proceed in all facets of our lives. Believe it or not, the same school of thought can be applied to your IT infrastructure.

It’s trending, and not in a good way

Don’t get us wrong, the technological developments in automation have done amazing things for the IT industry and for our lives in general. Using automation to complete simple tasks, generate workflows, or to ramp up security has and will continue to be a great aid.

However, a big draw back to automating software is that it does not catch everything. Sometimes there are trending issues that would only be identified if an actual human looked at it.

Most MSPs (Managed Service Providers) nowadays take a ‘set it and forget it’ type of attitude. They rely almost solely on automation and security software to get the job done. Trending issues and small hiccups sometimes go unnoticed until they become a large and possibly costly issue.

VSCAN – uniquely developed with customer success as a top priority.

VSCAN is a highly efficient IT resource, conducted by an experienced technician, that exposes any anomalies, threats, or other issues that system monitoring doesn’t reveal. Monthly audits help uncover trending issues that may lead to a larger failure, something that today’s automated tools and software may not catch.

Vodigy’s experienced technician will personally examine your technology environment for a sufficient amount of time each month. If anything is uncovered during this process, Vodigy will discuss recommendations with you in detail.
