Should Your Small Business Be Using Robots?

October 3, 2019

Industry 4.0. That’s what experts are calling the recent boom in internet and technology. Like the industrial Revolution, Industry 4.0 is shaping our world at a breakneck pace by bringing together incredible innovations from all over the world.

One of the most prominent features of Industry 4.0 is the use of robots. Now, more than ever, robots have evolved beyond the assembly line. Many businesses are using robots to do jobs that humans don’t want to or aren’t able to. They’re safer, more efficient, and better than ever before.

So, should your business be using robots? Your business might be a good candidate for robotic help if you can identify any of these needs in your business.

1) Repetitive Tasks

After you buy them, robots are cheaper than people. As innovation continues and technology improves, even the initial costs are coming down.

If your business relies on repetitive tasks, like moving boxes from one place to another, moving material through a warehouse, polishing, or other automatic actions, a robot may be a good fit.

Robots have become particularly popular in warehouses. Warehouses benefit from the automatic, easily-predictable nature of robots, and allow warehouse owners to keep costs down.

2) Error Reduction

Humans are fallible, especially when they zone out during repetitive tasks. Since robots don’t feel boredom, they complete boring tasks perfectly every time, without the need for constant human oversight or encouragement.

With robot-powered labor, your business can save money with fewer errors and less time.

3) Improve your Small Business Culture

Some people believe that robots will replace human labor entirely. Robotics experts argue that robots allow people to become better employees.

Instead of spending time on laborious, monotonous tasks, people are free to work towards elevated job titles. People can also train to work alongside robots, completing tasks that robots can’t.

4) Improve Safety

Large-scale manufacturers are relying more and more on entirely-automated process lines. When there are hot machines, sharp edges, or crushing hydraulic presses, having a robot on the line can be safer and less expensive.

For example, a robot can move in time with the machinery it’s assisting and require only oversight from a human. A human who makes an error in that environment may be heavily injured, requiring employers to pay out huge settlements and ruining workplace culture.

If you have dangerous places to work, replacing a person with a robot may make more sense.
