5 Signs It’s Time To Update Your Warehouse Storage System

December 30, 2019

Your warehouse storage system — or racking system — is what keeps your warehouse from being a pile of clutter on the floor. But even though it’s easy to take these systems for granted, and though they are built to last, there are still some tell-tale warning signs that you should replace them. If you don’t replace your racking system in time, you could deal with slower fulfillment and less efficiency.

If these symptoms sound familiar, it’s time to give your racking system a once-over — and possibly replace it.

1) Constant Repairs

There will be some wear and tear on your racking system, simply due to the nature of running a warehouse. But when your routine inspections always seem to turn up broken beams and canted shelves, it might be time to upgrade. (You are routinely inspecting your racking system, right?)

If left untreated, racking issues can create safety hazards for workers, customers, and your stock. If the issues are small, it may be more cost-effective to repair than to replace. But if the repairs start adding up, replacing is your best bet.

2) Beam Deflection

Beams will deflect under the weight of heavy stock. After that stock is moved, though, the beam should move back into place. If it doesn’t, the beam is damaged. And if it’s damaged, there’s a chance that your entire racking system could collapse, causing injuries and damaging stock. Deflected beams are one of the most important signs to look for when deciding whether or not to replace your racking system.

3) Difficulty Tracking Stock

Industry 4.0 has moved warehouses into a new era. If your employees struggle to locate stock, it might be the fault of your racking system. If you haven’t updated your racking system in over 30 years, consider doing so, and integrating RFID or barcode scanners to help your employees pick product correctly. Investing in an ERP or WMS can also help your warehouse run more effectively.

4) Slow Productivity

Have you noticed a slow, steady decline in productivity over the lifespan of your racking system? Before you blame your staff, find out whether or not it’s an issue with your racking system. Efficient warehousing relies on ease-of-access, ability for machinery to get to stock, and easy-to-understand layouts. If your product is hard to find and scattered across the floor, it may be time to update your storage system.

5) Lack of Space

Need more space, but can’t afford to expand? Newer racking systems take advantage of vertical space by allowing you to stock upward. While vertical stocking has its own set of safety requirements, the additional space can allow your warehouse to support more products without breaking the bank.
