woman sitting at a desk with shocked expression- colonial pipeline cyber attack
Ransomware Business Computer Malware Privacy Breach. Data Hacked

The Colonial Pipeline Attack & Your SMB

May 25, 2021

There are not a lot of positive things to say about the recent gas shortage. However, we did manage to get a few pretty good memes out of it. People were either so terrified that their actions would be misinterpreted or just so generally amused that they were wearing hand-drawn signs on their backs stating, ‘I swear it’s for my lawnmower!’.

All jokes aside, it was a terrifying wake-up call for a lot of businesses. Whether you are a small local retailer or a company that supplies 45% of the Eastern Seaboard with gasoline, a catastrophic ransomware attack is a possibility.

Colonial Pipeline and Me – The Difference

When interviewed the by the Wall Street Journal, Colonial Pipeline CEO Joseph Blount said that by the evening of May 7th, he knew they were going to have to pay. “I know that’s a highly controversial decision,” he admitted “I didn’t make it lightly. I will admit that I wasn’t comfortable seeing money go out the door to people like this.”

This quote says it all. The CEO was not comfortable seeing that money going out the door. Not devasted, ruined, or majorly inconvenienced but not comfortable. One can almost image him describing a disagreeable chair in his great-grandmother’s sitting room in the same way. Either way you view the situation, it is very clear that there are major differences between how a company like Colonial handles technology disasters and your SMB (small or medium business).

Infinite Bailout Activated

When the Colonial Pipeline went down, you can bet that almost instantaneously millions of dollars went into bringing it back online. At the same time, personnel and other resources were deployed in triplicate and the ‘resume at all costs’ effort was well on it’s way. Afterall, it was such a big event that the President was briefed.

Even with all that hard work and effort, it still took Colonial 5 days to get back up and running. While we are sure it stung, it is not something that is going to kill their business. An SMB on the other hand is a completely different story. And if your business is unfortunate enough to come under a ransomware attack, it could end up costing you way more than money.
