Here For Halloween – Truly Terrifying IT Horror Stories

Here For Halloween – Truly Terrifying IT Horror Stories

October 31, 2022

Stories about ghosts, ghouls, and monsters are terrifying tales, however – some of the scariest moments can happen a little closer to home. Rather, a little closer to the office.

Take a journey with us through a few frightening IT horror stories and learn how taking proper care of your IT infrastructure can help these situations from happening to your business.

A few lost toys were almost gone forever.

Our first tale takes as all the way back to 2012. While diligently working away at the film Toy Story 2, technical director Larry Cutler began to notice something odd about Woody’s files. At this point in the process, there should have been around 40 files in this particular directory, but they were quickly disappearing before his eyes.

This time around, Pixar ended up inadvertently erasing around two months of work plus hundreds of hours of labor. Thanks to the diligence of the staff, they were able to recover from this particular incident and get the film back on track.

At the time, one of their team members was working from home and had a recent copy of the film on her workstation. Once the realization hit, a few team members raced to her house and very carefully transported the machine back to headquarters. According to an article by Matthew Panzarino, the staff packed the workstation amidst blankets and joked that the car was the ‘100 million dollar Vovlo’ as they raced back.

Moral of the story? Always have a back-up plan, and back-up for your back-up plan. You never know what might happen!

Target lost, somewhere in Canada

IT disasters are not always one particularly heinous event, but sometimes a slow trickle of mistakes that lead up to unfixable end – like Target Canada.

It’s no surprise that Target decided to try and move the chain north of the border. With it’s success in the US, an expansion seemed like a great idea. Long story short, their technology infrastructure was not set up in a way that correctly converted metric to imperial and vice versa. In effect, Target was unable to properly distribute and stock items in their stores. Along with the intensity of their original kick off, Target become an unreliable retailer all to quickly in Canadian eyes.

One last nightmare

Disaster by definition is not a fun thing to deal with, especially when it comes to your data. However, some incidents are much more preferable than others.

About a year ago, a reddit user posted their IT related horror story. A client of theirs called with an emergency, not only was the business already ‘on it’s knees’ but their entire server room was covered in standing sewage.

Apparently, their server room was situation on a raised platform above a main sewer line. A drain blockaged cause the piper to rupture creating one hell of a clean-up project. The user stated that the company had the room cleaned up in about 8 hours but that the cost was probably astronimcal. At the time, the company had no choice but to pay through the nose to get their server room cleaned up and back online. The worst part is, the smell never quite left that room.
